The Linnean Society of London was founded in 1788 and is the world’s

oldest active biological society and takes its name from Carl Linneaus (1707-1778)

whose botanical, zoological and library collections have been its keeping since 1829

Linneaus laid the foundations for the modern biological

naming scheme of binomial nomenclature


The University of Oxford Botanical Garden was founded in 1621

and is the oldest botanical garden in Britain and one of the

oldest scientific gardens in the world. 1.8hectares, with 8,000 different species

and over 90% of the higher plant families represented.


The Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673

by The Society of Apothecaries and is one of Europe’s

oldest botanic gardens.


Kew is a garden site in London and was founded in 1759,

and declared a world heritage site in 2003, specialises in the

latest plant conservation with a focus on science plants and fungi.

Wakehurst is Kews 2nd country garden sited in West Sussex and

is the largest conservation project in the world holding the

Millennium Seed Bank
